Probably say, "not much". One becomes a large urban city, while Baileyville is a rural town in Maine in the east. Both had industrial bases were a beacon of workers from near and far. One is in auto-making and the second in the manufacture of paper. They share an apogee of more than hundred years ago. Why these industries are in decline? Was it because of poor planning or the loss of new ideas? As the car turned the country, Detroit's population quadrupled in those early days. The booming economy has boomed, skyscrapers were built, retail districts Retail flourished and continued expansion of a number of years. Detroit became prosperous and Baileyville inhabitants lived the good life and keep their families.

First Detroit auto plants were small, but Ford Motor Co., a pioneer in mass production and cutting-edge techniques are used in those days. Baileyville was producing newsprint with a record production to meet the newspapers in Boston and New York. There was much demand for their products. They became union with organized labor and better working conditions and remuneration rates for their workers. Where did wrong? Have become too ambitious or too complacent in their industries and techniques?

At Motown, built the Dodge Main plant in Hamtramck huge, just a short away from Ford. The River Rouge plant was completely independent production facility. It included a man of deep water port, the largest steel foundry in the world, ninety-four kilometers of railways, and printing, glass manufacturing and automotive assembly plants. At its peak, over 90,000 workers were employed at the Rouge. The plant became a major international showcase. In Baileyville, big dams mill houses were built railroads were built planned, added the paper machines and journalists in the south were satisfied.

The American industrial might was at its peak. They were so busy that never saw the erosion of their industries? In the early days, there was considerable ingenuity and attention to produce the best possible performance. In 1906, Santa Cruz Paper Company opened Baileyville factory, later sold to Georgia Pacific, which invested in a state of kraft mill art and later sold to current owner, Domtar Industries. With this growth, Connecticut beat Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, in the amount of paper produced, becoming the third leading state in manufacturing paper, behind Massachusetts and New York. In the first part of the 20th century, Maine mills increased, principally by adding new machines, machines existing, were also made to run faster. However, the continued building new factories farther west as Wisconsin became an increasingly important player. Competition also came from Canada, where shipments to the U.S. paper increased. Some factories could not compete Maine and closed and others converted to other types of paper production.
From 1930 until the 1960s, no new factories were built in Maine, but many changes existing mills in Maine driven to be the nation's leading paper producing state.

Once a producer, you have to be looking over his shoulder as is a competitive world out there. When any industry steadily improving, the decline begins. There must be a constant improvement in infrastructure, cutting-edge techniques, technical research and long-range planning or exceed its competitors' market share. All these improvements and changes require an investment almost constantly if you want to stay in the lead.

Today, foreign competition, coupled with relaxed regulation and different standards have affected our industries and forced to decline. Detroit suffers and so do places like Baileyville, when competition is allowed to advance their industries either by their own mistakes or poor performance. Our legislative leaders have harmed our business in the country to accept unfair trade practices with other countries, rarely once buy our products.
