Transcribing/Indexing 1940 census records.?
I know it won’t be available till 4/12 but who transcribes the census records that aren’t “public” yet?
I do Indexing for FamilySearch and am interested in the upcoming census records.
Since I know quite a lot about the 1940 census….. let me address your question.
First, the National Archives is planning to digitize and put online the 1940 population schedules. There will be no film. Second, since April 1st, 2012 falls on a Sunday, it is likely that this census won’t be available until the next day.
There was talk about a third party indexing the 1940 census before it becomes public…. but so far it’s just talk. The process would have to overcome the 72 year privacy regulations, and I just don’t see that happening. In addition, if the census is online, then some group such as the LDS could mount a volunteer campaign to transcribe the census. Thus a commercial interest might have little incentive to do a name index.
However, if you want to help, I have all sorts of projects. I am completing transcribing the T1224 NARA films of the 1940 ED definitions, all 28 rolls. I’m 80% through and the transcriptions are being used by NARA (National Archives) for their indexing project. I don’t think I need help with that. As I’m completing the transcriptions (and they are being proofed by NARA), they have been going online.
A few years ago I had 70 to 80 volunteers help me produce street indexes for the top 200 plus US cities for the 1940 census. That project is complete and the indexes online. I have targeted, however, another 200 plus cities of 25,000 to 50,000 people to do street indexes online. I have another 325 cities of under 25,000 that could also be done.
I have 80GB of scanned NARA film… 3,570 folders and 61,879 files. I have scans of all the ED descriptions, and all the ED maps for the above cities, and am always looking for volunteers to help with the map transcriptions.
All the databases are being used by Steve Morse on the One Step Website (stevemorse.org) so we WILL be very ready to help people do geographical searches when the census is opened to the public.
